Proud to be an Aussie

I thought that with the unofficial long weekend of Australia Day having just ended, I'd take the time to talk about why I love being an Aussie. You see, my heritage is actually German and although I suspect I would very much enjoy their staples of bratwurst and pork knuckle, I'm very proud to be a through and through Aussie dog.

Here are my top five reasons, in no particular order:

1. The BBQ

Shrimp are fine, but sausages and steaks are way better. The smell makes my spit fall out of my mouth (the humans unflatteringly call this drooling) and it's the highlight of my day should a piece of meat drop to the ground (I learnt quite early not to help myself straight from the grill - poor hot nose).

2. Thongs

The Aussie type that the humans wear on their feet of course. There's always a pair lying somewhere around the house, so it makes for convenient picking up during moments of excitement, or taking to bed for moments of relaxation (with human-smell company).

3. Ugg Boots

As per thongs but much more cosy to cuddle with. I know, no chewing allowed.

4. The Beach

I've spoken of my love for the water before and it just keeps growing as I become an even better swimmer. We are a lucky country to be surrounded by mostly clean, swimmable water. I can only hope any inland dogs don't know what they're missing out on.

5. Flies

This one's a bit contentious. They're a bit annoying, but we have similar interests (seeking out uncovered food) and they like a good game of chasey.

So, a belated Happy Australia Day everyone. May you all enjoy the simple Aussie pleasures as much as I do.
